Honeywell HPA300 True HEPA Allergen Remover - Review and Recommendation
Honeywell HPA300 HEPA Air Purifier is high capacity room air purifier that comes at relatively affordable price. It combines active carbon filter with true HEPA mechanical air filter to remove common household odors, dust, pet dander, mites, smoke and other airborne pollutants that can cause serious health issues. With the use of special active carbon filter, it can even remove harmful gases.

Honeywell HPA300 comes in as a stylish looking tower unit. Its dimensions are 20.08 x 10.83 x 22.32 inches (~51 x 27.5 x 56.7 cm) and it anything but a small unit. It is recommended to place the unit on the permanent location on the floor. It can be positioned even on the desk, but it requires much space.
Honeywell HPA300 is designed to be used as the air purifier in really large rooms or even smaller apartments - when being used as small apartment air purifier, air purification in adjacent rooms is limited, when compared with the air purification in the room where unit operates.
Its CADR ratings are 300 for smoke, 320 for dust and 300 for pollen. When used in so-called turbo mode, it can filter air in the room of recommended size up to 5x per hour.
Unit comes with three specially designed cleaning modes:
- Allergen mode optimizes allergen capturing performance during allergen season - recommended for people having issues with allergies.
- General Clean mode is used for general, everyday air cleaning.
- Germ cleaning mode optimizes germ capturing performance. It should be used during cold and flu season.
Note that there is also so-called Turbo mode - unit must be in one of the three available modes before the user can chose Turbo mode. In Turbo mode, air fan operates at the maximum speed and air flow through the unit is at its maximum. This mode is used for power cleaning or fast odor reduction.
Honeywell HPA300 is simple to use unit. Just to be sure, before the very first use, read the manual/instructions thoroughly.
Console features control panel light dimmer, so that the unit can be used during the night, without causing any sleeping issues due to the console light.
Also, HPA300 comes with the automatic shut-off timer, with three possible settings of two, four or eight hours. Use of timer is optional and the unit can operate continuously.
Personally, if you are not sure, just set the General Clean, dim the console light and forget the timer.
Maximum power consumption of Honeywell HPA300 is around 130 W and it doesn't feature air humidifier, air dehumidifier, air cooler or air heater.
Nonetheless, some users report that their rooms feel warmer and some users report that their rooms feel colder when the unit operates - it is all about the air flow. When HPA operates, it helps mix the air in the room, which is colder near the floor and warmer near the ceiling. This mixing decreases the air temperature difference between the floor and ceiling air, leading to improved air quality. Additional benefit of this and similar units.
Honeywell HPA300 Air Filters
Honeywell HPA300 uses one active carbon filter and one true HEPA mechanical air filter, which consists of three separate filter plates.
- active carbon HRF-AP1 air filter capture household odors and help protect true HEPA air filter by filtering out larger particles like lint, pet fur, dust and similar.
- active carbon HRF-APP1 is very similar to HRF-AP1, but it also includes zeolite - it helps remove even harmful gases from the air. HRF-AP1 comes by default with the unit, and HRF-APP1 must be ordered separately. Note: none of these filters remove carbon monoxide from the air!
- true HEPA HRF-R3 (3 Filters) air filter, which removes 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger air particles.
Note: Both HRF-AP1 and HRF-APP1 should be replaced after three months of operation, and HRF-R3 air filter should be replaced after 12 months of operation. To help the user with filter replacement, Honeywell HPA300 features electronic filter replacement reminders.
Proper operation of HPA300 (and other similar units) depends on the quality of air filters - thus, always go for high-quality OEM air filters. Going cheap with filters can negate the very purpose of these units - air purification.
None of the air filters used in HPA300 are washable - when the time comes, simply replace them.
For proper maintenance procedures, again, check the manual. HPA300 is simple to operate and maintain unit, but better safe than sorry.

Although HPA200 and HPA250B are very similar in terms of size, CADR ratings, and HEPA filters, note that HPA250B is Bluetooth eneabled unit and can be controlled with an iPhone or Android mobile device.
Long Story Short: Honeywell HPA300 is excellent air purifier, suitable for really large rooms. HRF-APP1 filters cost more than HRF-AP1 filters, but they are replaced every three months on average, and cost difference over such long period is, IMHO, negligible.
