Bissell PowerFresh 1940 Steam Mop is designed for cleaning bare floors like ceramic tiles, stone, marble, vinyl, sealed hardwood etc.
Bissell 1940 steam mop comes with three steam settings: Low, Normal, High.
Low steam setting is intended for cleaning sealed wooden floors and similar sensitive surfaces. Before cleaning such surfaces, check if the surface is certified for cleaning with hot steam and even if it is, test it on small area.
Waxed surfaces should not be cleaned using any steam mop or steam vacuum, since steam can damage the wax coating.
Normal steam setting is used for everyday cleaning.
High steam setting is used for cleaning especially tough messes and stubborn dirt.
Actual cleaning is done by combining the hot steam with scrubbing effect of cleaning pads. Bissell 1940 comes with two types of microfiber cleaning pads: soft microfiber pad for normal cleaning and cleaning of the sensitive floors and scrubby microfiber steam mop pad for tougher messes. And if scrubby cleaning pad is not strong enough, user can easily employ 'Easy Scrubber' brush.
Microfiber cleaning pads are washable and reusable. They also feature antimicrobial protection, to prevent buildup of smells and bacteria/germs.
When cleaning pads get dirty, they are easily changed, just be very careful since they can be very hot!
To speed up cleaning and to change cleaning pads less often, it is good practice to vacuum the floors first before cleaning them with the steam mop.
To increase the feeling of freshness, Bissell 1940 comes with two scented Spring Breeze Fragrance discs - discs are placed in special cleaning pad pocket.
Hot steam is capable of sanitizing the floors by killing 99.9% bacteria and germs in general, at least in lab conditions. In real life, this percentage can be even higher, just be sure not to overheat and damage your floors.
Steam mops are generally easy to use, but before the first use, be sure to read the manual/instructions.
Bissell 1940 PowerFresh Steam Mop power requirement is 1500W and is powered with 23 feet (~7 m) long power cord. Unit doesn't feature power cord rewind system - power cord is manually wrapped around cord wrap hooks.
Built-in heater requires some 30 seconds to start to produce the steam, which is typical waiting time for steam mops in this class.
Cleaning width is 12 inches (~30.5 cm) allowing the user to clean rather large area quickly.
Bissell 1940 weighs 6 pounds (~2.72 kg) with empty tank, which can store 16 oz of water. Thanks to lightweight design, swivel mechanism, an ergonomically shaped handle with soft grip, unit is very maneuverable and easy to use for extended periods of time.
Tap Water - Yes or No?
For short - No. Bissell 1940 steam mop should be used with distilled or demineralized water. Hard tap water leaves residue on the steam mop heater and other internal components and also leaves streaks and marks on the cleaned floor.
If you don't like to use scented discs, Bissell manufactures scented demineralized water, specially formulated for use in steam mops - such scented water increases the steam mop's life time, makes no marks or streaks on the floor, and leaves pleasant fragrance in the air.
Bissell scented demineralized water comes in several fragrances: Citrus, Eucalyptus Mint and Spring Fresh.
Note: scented demineralized water is 'just' demineralized water with added scent and fragrance - it contains no heavy metals, it leaves no dulling residue on the floor, creates no harmful fumes etc. But, it is not 'cleaning agent' - in fact, cleaning agents should not be used with this or any other steam mop, unless they are specifically designed for use in the steam mops.
